His self-discovery as an artist began in high school, living by the sea. The original fine art magic emerged with the discoveries of that age of enlightenment. As a result, Hugh was voted the most artistic senior in the South High class of 1967.

At El Camino College, Hugh was a fine art major. He moved to the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles where his exquisite education was interrupted by the United States Selective Service. After achieving Conscientious Objector status, he refused to participate in the Vietnam War. Following a move to San Francisco and alternative service for a nonprofit organization for two years, he continued his education at The Academy of Art in San Francisco, earning a Bachelors of Fine Art degree in illustration. A short stint as a film animator was followed by, out of financial necessity, a career as a house painter—or so it seemed. In reality, it was Hugh's educational foundation as a future furnisher of faux finishes and color consultant.
The 1980s—A Move to Marin County The famed decade of greed began with Hugh Schone's visionary painting in the forest tree-house. He held an exhibition of paintings in two fine art galleries in San Francisco. He also ventured into graphic design; herb and spice shipping in Mill Valley; and house painting. A return to Southern California as a graphic designer ended up with him working for a faux finisher and mural artist, learning and producing carved-cast bas-relief sculpture wall-fragment art pieces.
The 1990s—The Creation This experience led Hugh Schone to create his own faux finishing business, Fine Finishes. Now, he has watered and grown Fine Finishes into a successful business, creating a reputation as a professional designer and mural artist as well as a large body of work of paintings and drawings.
Inspiration and Interpretation There is a sweet magic and mystery of life. Despite the pain and heartache that we all endure, we have this place, this realm, this piece of earth on a lonely end of the galaxy, to play out our personal drama. Art is an interpretation and creation of our world and a design for others to experience with us, in which they can realize a thousand different dreams, each according to their own level of consciousness and understanding. Art is a means to cleaning and sharing the soul, and a medium in which we share our selves with ourselves.
